M.Eng./PG Diploma in Water Resources Engineering and Management

The Programme conduct-ed by the UNESCO Madanjeet Centre for South Asia Water Management (UMCSAWM) attached to the Department of Civil Engineering, has been designed to teach Water Management in a regional context and intends to provide participants from a wide range of backgrounds a firm grounding in the principles, techniques, issues and practice of Water Resource Engineering and Management. M. Eng. /PG Diploma in Foundation Engineering and Earth Retaining System


 

The aim of the course conducted on a part-time basis is to provide a specialist training to participating civil engineers in the; analysis, design and construction of building foundation and earthrating system; improvement of soft soil, and solving various problem related geotechnical aspects. The taught part of the course is conducted on Fridays and Saturdays, so that participating engineers will be able to follow the course without interrupting their careers.


Entry Requirements:

Application should have a Degree in Civil Engineering from a University in Sri Lanka, or equalent qualifications from any other university as acceptable to the University of Moratuwa. Alternatively, applications should have an associate Membership of a recognized professional engineering Institution in the relevant field as acceptable to the university of Moratuwa, with a minimum of one year of experience after obtaining such memebership.

One credit corresponds to approximately 14 hours of Lecturers or 28 hours of assignment.

The above work will be held from 8.30 am -5.30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. The performance of the candidate will be evaluated through course work assignments and written examinations.

During the course, the candidates will be required to undertake a group design project, in the form of a comprehensive design involving design of Foundations, ground improvements and earth retaining system under the supervision of a staff member. A group will consist of four candidates. The progress of this project will be monitored through seminars.

On completion of the Design Project, the group is required to submit a report and the performance of each individual candidate will be assessed based on this report and an oral examination.

Course leading to Master of Engineering

Curriculum for taught part of the course is identical to that for Post Graduate Diploma course. In addition, each candidate for the Master of Engineering Degree should undertake a suitable research project of 20 credits under the supervision of a staff member and complete it successfully. The progress of the research project will be monitored through regular seminars.

On completion of the research project the candidate is required to submit a thesis and the evaluation of performance will be made based on this thesis and oral examination.

As one of the pioneers in the education sector of Sri Lanka, the University of Moratuwa has taken the responsibility for introducing expert education and broad training in Construction Project Management. The importance of Construction of Project Management is becoming a vital component of management education in Sri Lanka. Infrastructure Development Projects and mega scale Building Projects regularly require number of component project managers to deliver these important projects within the allocated time, within the given budget and to the required quality.

 

The mission of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Moratuwa Sri Lanka is to develop educational programmes that provides educational, research and professional experience that enable our graduates to become leaders in their professional carriers, to pursue excellence in research, and to serve the profession, community and Nation, and to competitive in the international scene. In addition to teaching and research, the staff members in the Department undertake consultancy assignment and provide advisory service to the industry and are considered as one of the best places in the industry for management advice. The Department of Civil Engineering has six divisions and each division conducts a Post-Graduate course leading to PG-Diploma and Masters’ Degree Program.

 

Construction Engineering and Management Division of the Department of Civil Engineering offer M.Sc./PG Diploma specialized in Construction Project Management for wider target group focusing on practicing professionals and Managers; Quantity Surveyors; Entrepreneurs and all other categories of professional related to the Construction Industry. Lecturers for the M.Sc. / PG Diploma have been chosen for their knowledge of the subject and expertise in communicating the necessary fundamental concepts with practical applications and technological issues in mind. Candidates applying for M.Sc. /PG Diploma in Construction Project Management should have the following eligibility requirements.

Teaching/Learning Model:

The learning model of this M.Sc./PG Dip is an inductive process which goes beyond facts and theories of class room. Especially, student empowerment is the main objective of our teaching model. Therefore, active and interactive teaching methods will be used with case studies and syndicates. Through these methods, students are exposed to real life situations that are relevant, intellectually and emotionally engaging and highly interactive. This creates a challenging learning environment that encouraging everyone to shair opinions and perspectives and learns from each other. Traditional University teaching also will be utilized together with seminars and tutorials. Special guest lecturers and field visits will be arranged from time to time. A few research seminars will be arranged to present student research projects.

M.Sc./PG Dip in Structural Engineering Design

The Structural Engineer with a knowledge and understanding of material behavior and structural actions is able to design with economy and elegance, structures that fulfill their intended purpose, while safety resisting the forces to which they may be subjected.

 

However, with rapid advances in materials technology and availability of advanced computational techniques the successful structural engineer must continuously update his/her knowledge and keep abreast with recent development in structural engineering.

 

The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Moratuwa aims to fulfill the need for Continuing Professional Development by conducting a Postgraduate Course in Structural Engineering Design on a part time basis for practicing engineers.

 

The Course is conducted by the Division of Building and Structural Engineering of the Department. This division comprises experts in many aspects of modern structural engineering design. They have established a close relationship with industry through consultancy and contract research in such areas as concrete technology, timber technology, Building materials, masonry structures and also structural design and investigations. Research in design methodology, tall buildings, and finite element analysis are also being carried out.

The candidates selected for the M.Eng. Degree programme must obtain a pass grade in each of the subjects in order to qualify for the M. Eng. Degree. In addition, a suitable research/design project needs to be carried out with dissertation submitted on completion of the project.

 

P.G Diploma:

  •       Duration: 12-15 months

Candidates selected for the P.G Dip must obtain a pass grade in each of the subjects to obtain PG Diploma. However, the registration of such candidates will not be upgrade to that of M.Eng. degree at a later stage.

  • The Degree of Bachelor of Science of Engineering of the University of Moratuwa, Specializing in Civil Engineering;

MSc in Project Management

 The discipline of Project Management is becoming a vital component of management education world-wide, since it makes managers more able to respond intelligently to the management of projects. The programme conducts on part-time basis, enabling you to continue your career while gaining further knowledge and qualifications.

Teaching is carried out by our well experienced staff together with academics from other universities and institutions. Visiting lecturers from industry are sometimes invited to give talks on industrial processes and product development.
